WHY SHOULD I USE QIA CONSULTANTS?

Many companies debate whether to use outside consultants in implementing an ISO 9000 or related system. The decision should be based on economics. It is similar to deciding whether you should fix a leaking faucet yourself or pay a plumber. If you paid a plumber, it might cost you $50 for a 15 minutes job, or $200 per hour.

You might therefore decide you should do it yourself, if your time is worth less than $200 per hour, and is, say $20 per hour. However, the typical homeowner needs to make 2-3 trips to the hardware store, spend most of a Saturday doing the job, and a small percentage finally ends up calling a plumber anyway. Even if he stops the leak, he has probably spent $ 20 in tools and supplies 20 miles driving ($7), and 6 hours of his time. Total expenditure $ 137. Plus the opportunity cost of not spending time with the family.

The following logic was developed in concert with one of our clients. Check it out, and if reasonable, use it to calculate the economics.

  • Our Consultants have 12+ years experience of exclusive ISO 9000 experience, which will allow them to be 3-5 times as efficient at doing ISO work as a typical quality professional with some ISO training.
  • The system that our consultants will develop will be much more effective than that developed by a typical quality professional.
  • Our consultants will bring an outside perspective, and they will be able to look beyond the trees.

COST OF USING OUR CONSULTANTS:

  • Predicted and Fixed Fee--reduced by an efficiency factor of 3-5 compared to typical quality professionals specializing in a company’s industry.

COST OF USING INTERNAL PEOPLE:

  • Opportunity cost of what that person would be contributing to the business in the job he/she is proficient in--had he not been pulled away-- 5-15 times the wages.

COST OF USING INTERNAL PEOPLE:

  • Cost of Inefficient System--costs more in wasteful and unnecessary routines built into the system. The system costs more to operate.
  • Cost of Inefficient System--opportunity cost of what a better system would have benefited the company. Two identical companies can have vastly different systems and both be in compliance.
  • If in Company A, Sales were $5 million and Materials $3 million per year, and there are 5 management staff members, then the opportunity cost of releasing one member of management would be:
    –$2 million/5/200 days = $2,000 per day
  • If in Company B, Sales were $150 million and Materials $90 million per year, and there are 50 management staff members, then the opportunity cost of releasing one member of management would be: –$60 million/50/200 days = $6,000 per day
