One of their key duties is ensuring that the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method is followed to avoid waste and maintain accuracy in results. This means older reagents are used before the newer ones, which sounds simple, but in a busy lab, it takes sharp attention to detail and consistent organization. Lab managers often label items clearly with expiry dates, arrange shelves to reflect usage order, and regularly audit the inventory to catch anything nearings its end of life. By doing so, they prevent the use of expired reagents- something that could easily compromise the integrity of the experiments/tests performed.

A lab manager is responsible for managing the financial aspects of the laboratory’s operations, which includes creating and maintaining the lab’s budget. This task involves allocating funds for various operational needs, such as salaries, equipment, supplies, and maintenance.

The lab manager must ensure that expenses are carefully tracked and that the lab remains within its financial limits while still acquiring the necessary tools and resources for effective operations.
